For nearly five years, Homeboy has enjoyed the free use of the Main Street parking lot immediately to the east of Homeboy’s home and paved parking. After the first week in our new home, we found we were dependent on this space for critical functions:
→ Staff parking and storage of Homeboy trucks and vans – this keeps the Bruno Street parking lot open for customers, tour groups and clients
→ Office space in the former construction trailer for Mental Health, Retreats and Catering
→ Homeboy’s Clothing Closet, run by our volunteer manager, providing donated interview, work and daily-use clothing from a storage facility with a canopy space so clients can “shop” in comfort
→ Three shipping containers for the Merchandise store and general office storage
→ Homegirl Café’s mini-farm (1 of 5 community gardens) providing training space and produce for the Café
→ Outdoor picnic garden for daily use, particularly to provide large tour groups with Homegirl-catered meals
→ The location of the Café’s popular Friday Street Eats program
An agreement gave us the opportunity to buy the parcel at a future time, and that time has now come.
The Main Street parking lot is available for purchase NOW:
→ Total cost, $777,000
→ Non-refundable deposit, $100,000, due March 1, 2012
→ Transaction closing, $677,000, due June 1, 2012
→ Paving, landscaping, walkway to Bruno Street lot, basketball hoop and court striping, additional lighting and fencing, estimated at $200,000
We are in discussions with the City of Los Angeles regarding the possibility of leasing the police lot located immediately south on the Homeboy block. If this comes to fruition within the next few months, then we can create a master plan for the entire outdoor space.
